The Path Home: A Fall Weekend at Wolf Cove Inn

WELL-WORN PATHS · CHAPTER 16
A WEEKEND AWAY
The Path Home

An autumn escape to Poland, Maine, with Rancourt & Co.

A few weeks of changing leaves, cooler mornings and that stretch of weather when you find just about any reason to stay outside a little longer. Sometimes that's enough reason to get away for a night or two.

For our latest chapter of The Path Home, we traveled to Wolf Cove Inn in Poland, Maine. Set along Tripp Lake, it's not far from our workshop in Lewiston, but it feels far enough away to change the pace.

We brought along some of the shoes we've been making for Fall, a few things for the weekend and nowhere particularly important to be. From mornings by the lake to afternoons by the fire and dinner at the Inn, it was a chance to enjoy Fall in Maine while it lasts.

What to Pack: The Essentials for a Fall Getaway

A weekend away doesn't require much, especially when everything you bring serves a purpose. For a fall escape to the lake, we believe in packing thoughtfully: comfortable layers, versatile footwear, and well-made accessories that only get better with time.

Our weekend packing list:

  • Schoodic Leather Tote: A dependable travel companion, with plenty of room for the essentials and a timeless design that feels equally at home in the city or countryside.

  • Hamlin Belt: A finishing touch that brings an outfit together, crafted with the same attention to detail as our footwear.

  • Hamlin 5-Slot Burgundy Shell Cordovan Bi-Fold Wallet : A simple everyday essential, made to be carried for years to come.

  • Swivel Key Ring :A small detail that makes a difference, keeping the essentials close at hand.

  • Classic Knit Sweater: A substantial cable-knit layer, ideal for cool mornings by the lake and evenings outdoors.

  • Dark Denim and Casual Trousers: Versatile staples that make transitioning from daytime adventures to dinner effortless.

  • New Fall, Including Belgrade in Burnt Chiptan Bison: Because the right pair of shoes can take you just about anywhere.

The idea is simple: bring things that work together, wear well and get better with time. It's the same approach we take to the shoes and leather goods we make in Lewiston.

Arriving at Wolf Cove Inn: Making Yourself at Home

After the drive through winding country roads and the changing colors of autumn, arriving at Wolf Cove Inn feels like an invitation to settle in.

Our home for the weekend was the Deer Isle Suite, a comfortable retreat where we could unpack, take in the surroundings, and enjoy a slower pace.

Our new Bradbury Slipper in Cognac Bison, finished with a rubber sole, combines the ease of a house slipper with enough practicality for stepping outside.

It's the kind of footwear you'll find yourself reaching for first thing in the morning and again at the end of a long day.

Because sometimes, the best part of getting away is feeling right at home.

A Morning on Tripp Lake

One of the best ways to experience Maine in the fall is from the water. With the trees turning brilliant shades of gold, amber, and red, Tripp Lake offers a different perspective on the season.

Wolf Cove Inn provides complimentary kayaks for guests, making it easy to spend a morning exploring the shoreline and taking in the scenery.

Before heading out, we stopped by the Boathouse to gather what we needed for a day by the lake.

For the morning, we wore the Belgrade in Burnt Chiptan and the Harrison in Roughman Chocolate. The grain, warm color and natural variation feel particularly at home against a Maine autumn. It's also the kind of leather we like because it isn't meant to stay exactly as it looked on the day it left our workshop. Wear becomes part of its character.

The shoes we brought with us started not far from here, in our workshop in Lewiston. Each pair is cut, stitched, handsewn, shaped and finished before it leaves our hands. Where it goes from there, and the character it develops along the way, belongs to the person wearing it.

After all, some of the best paths aren't planned. They're discovered when we give ourselves the time to explore.

Lunch at the Boathouse Bistro

After a morning spent enjoying the lake, there's nothing better than settling in for a good meal.

The Boathouse Bistro offers a relaxed setting to enjoy lunch and take in the lakeside atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can linger a little longer, share stories from the morning, and appreciate the simple pleasure of having nowhere else to be.

The Cup Sole Penny in Burnt Chiptan offered a different take on the same Burnt Chiptan Bison we'd worn earlier in the Belgrade, this time paired with a casual rubber cup sole. Paired with denim and a favorite sweater, it's an easy choice for a Fall weekend and a good example of how differently the same leather can work across two Rancourt patterns.

An Afternoon by the Fire

As the afternoon light begins to soften and the temperatures cool, there's no better place to be than outside by the fire. We spent part of our afternoon gathering around the fire pit, taking in the fresh air and the changing landscape surrounding the Inn.

These are the moments that make a fall weekend in Maine memorable. The smell of woodsmoke, the sound of leaves underfoot, and the warmth of a fire as the day winds down.

This is really where The Path Home begins to make sense. We make shoes to be worn, lived in and changed by the places they go. The scuffs, creases and changes in the leather aren't something to avoid. They're part of what eventually makes a pair your own.

A Whiskey at The Den

As daylight fades, the weekend takes on a different pace.

Before dinner, we made our way to The Den, Wolf Cove Inn's bar, for a whiskey and a chance to unwind.

For the evening, the Casual Horsebit in Heritage Brown fit the setting. Built with the relaxed feel of a camp moc and finished with the classic horsebit detail, it sits somewhere between dressed up and casual.

And after a full day spent exploring, sometimes all you need is a comfortable place to sit, a good whiskey, and a little time to enjoy the moment.

Dinner, Done Right

There's something special about ending a day away with a memorable dinner.

Dinner at Wolf Cove Inn gave us a good reason to dress things up a little. Executive Chef Kevin Peters and his team work with seasonal ingredients and locally sourced flavors, creating a dining experience that feels very much connected to Maine.

For dinner, the classic the  Horsebit Loafer in Dark Brown Calf offered a more refined counterpart to the Casual Horsebit we'd worn earlier. Crafted from supple calfskin leather, it's a classic Rancourt style that brings a more refined finish to the evening.

The beauty of a timeless loafer is its versatility. It's a style that feels just as relevant today as it did generations ago, designed to remain part of your wardrobe for years to come.

A good meal, good company, and a pair of shoes made with care. Sometimes, that's all an evening needs.

Not Far From Home

Wolf Cove isn't far from our workshop in Lewiston. Maybe that's part of what we liked about it.

Getting away doesn't always require going very far. Sometimes it's a road you haven't taken in a while, a quiet morning by the water, dinner somewhere new or simply enough time to notice the season before it changes again.

We make our shoes in Lewiston, but what happens after they leave our workshop belongs to the people who wear them. The leather softens. The soles show miles. Marks appear. Eventually, a pair begins to tell a story we couldn't have made at the factory. That's one of our favorite parts.

Every well-worn path leads home.
